Regarding Fish Kills…..

When many fish in an aquatic system die at one time, it is commonly referred to as a fish kill. Fish kills are unsightly, smell bad and can change the composition of the fish population in the affected water body.  This past winter was particularly hard on fish.

Fish kills usually occur naturally in response to stress that fish face throughout their life cycle. Mainly adverse winter conditions and spawning. The vast majority of fish kills occur due to low oxygen levels in the water body.  Shallow lakes or ponds with very high nutrient levels are particularly prone to fish kills that due to low oxygen levels. Aquatic herbicides are usually the first to be blamed when a fish kill occurs. The reality is that rarely are aquatic herbicides responsible.
